General Ideas
I already have an idea of the world and aesthetic elements I want to put in it. These will be developed and changed with my research but here they are as they stand.
The big thematic thing I based thing world around is birds. This gives me a good starting point for the culture and design rather than pulling stuff out of the air. The people are bird like and have magic wings that allow them the ability to glide shirt distances. This opens their range of movement up greater than our own.
RELIGION
The religion is based on the sky, due to the whole birds and flight thing. The main gods are the Sun and Moon. The lesser gods are the Lord of the Winds and Lady of the Stars.
There's a religious figure called the Phoenix. The first Phoenix was the human daughter of the Sun, who looked upon the people she created and wanted a child of her own. However, when the Phoenix went to live among the humans, they eventually became jealous of the powers the Sun had given her, seeing her as favoured above them rather than equal, and killed her. The Sun was heartbroken, but before the Phoenix could pass on to the Afterlife (note: figure out what the afterlife is like here), the Moon saved her, keeping her soul safe until her body was burnt and raised by the power of the Sun's flames.
Eventually, the Phoenix had a child of her own, and grew sad at the idea that her child would die and she would keep on living, and so she asked the Sun to pass her powers on to her child instead. So now, when the current Phoenix, their body is either burnt to bring them back, or their power is passed on to their child (or next living descendant, if they don't have a kid.) (Maybe body has to be 'given to the moon' in order for their power to be passed on? as opposed to 'given to the sun', aka cremation.)
The Phoenix is kind of a religious figurehead, sorta like magic royalty? Lives in the religious capitol with the church, being a leader and doing good and all that. At the current point in time, the Phoenix has been missing for like 30-40 years. The Church is keeping an eye on their known next of kin, but they haven't inherited the powers yet, so everyone's just kinda waiting for her or their next descendant to show up.
GENDER
People can be men, women, or other (there'd be some word for the Other, but I haven't gotten it yet.) There'd also be terms meaning masculine-other and feminine-other, though they call come under the Other umbrella term.
Maybe gender traits are based on the Lord of the Winds and Lady of the Stars?
Winds = strength, travel, adaptability
Stars = consistency, guidance, knowledge
Other = a mix? embodying both or neither. maybe a rejection of the idea of assigned roles. There's lots of ways to be an Other I guess.
Actually if we're gonna do that why even have the whole sex=gender system anyway?? Gender is the presentation of how you act? Probably still gendered with he/she/they for ease of language but not at all tied to what body you have. Actually maybe untie it from he/she/lord/lady anyway cause otherwise it gets all mixed up with our real world system and muddies the message a bit.
SEXUALITY
Gender is fake. Who gives a damn. Kiss who ya wanna. I can't imagine why this would be an issue in the above system.
