General Ideas

I already have an idea of the world and aesthetic elements I want to put in it. These will be developed and changed with my research but here they are as they stand. The big thematic thing I based thing world around is birds. This gives me a good starting point for the culture and design rather than pulling stuff out of the air. The people are bird like and have magic wings that allow them the ability to glide shirt distances. This opens their range of movement up greater than our own. RELIGION The religion is based on the sky, due to the whole birds and flight thing. The main gods are the Sun and Moon. The lesser gods are the Lord of the Winds and Lady of the Stars. There's a religious figure called the Phoenix. The first Phoenix was the human daughter of the Sun, who looked upon the people she created and wanted a child of her own. However, when the Phoenix went to live among the humans, they eventually became jealous of the powers the Sun had given her, seeing her as fa...

Week 2 - Workshops

Before next week, define your idea in the form of the sentence: I am a _____________ exploring _____________ design through ____________. Next week is the first peer to peer showing of our ideas, so we need to have something visual to show, a who/what/where/why of our idea, and an elevator pitch to present it with. Workshop 1 - Talking about 'things' with Karl and Lee There are three categories to a 'thing': Style what does it look like? Modernism, post modernism, ancient, etc Philosophy what is the thought behind it? People focused, for profit, etc Cultural formation what environment produced it? Post WW1, economic boom, high immigration, etc These three elements combined make the thing. If you change one element, it's not the same thing, even if it still looks like it from the outside. If it looks like punk and sounds like punk, but doesn't have the philosophy of punk, it isn't really punk. Consider the context of things you ...

Week 1 - Issue and Application

For this first week, Karl had us narrow down our project ideas (or lack of them) into an issue and an application. For mine, the issues I was interested in were: Identity Representation Fantasy Diversity And my applications were Illustration Concept art World building The idea I had over summer for my project this year was a story bible for a fantasy world. I have some ideas for the aesthetic of this world, but I wanted it to be an exercise in researched world building. I want to make informed design choices that don't just replicate the kind of generic fantasy we tend to reproduce without thinking. I'm most interested in: creating a society with different rules of gender and sexuality creating a religion/creation myth that is unique and seeing how that effects daily life making a strong aesthetic cohesion in environments and objects For this, I've narrowed down my current issue/application to: Exploring the issue of Western centricism in ...
