Week 9 - Workshops

Workshop 1: What am I doooing? An abstract is a condensing of what you’ve already said OR The first step and then the last step. Two modes of editing: additive or subtractive. Do a lot and then cut it down OR do a bare bones and then add to it. Painting is additive and sculpting is subtractive. 1. Motivation Why are you doing this? What have you observed and what are you gonna do about it. 2. Problem Statement What is the exact problem? Are traffic problems caused by the vehicles or the width of the the road or the people on it? A micro-interaction that could change the tide. 3. The Approach How are you going to do it? VCD is so big, you could do anything. An app, poster, interaction, user experience, a simulation, a prototype, an installation, social communication, a space. Can be big or small and specific. 4. Results What do you think the results are gonna be? Validating your explorations will help you get to the next step. What will the results of your thing be? What are pe...

Week 8: One on One with Kerry Ann

I had a talk with Kerry Ann (alongside a couple of other students). The main take aways from it were: What's the story? Kerry Ann was more concerned with the story than Caroline was. She pointed out that the story can add to the theme of the project. Is the story breaking or using stereotypical tropes of fantasy stories? Within the story, how are the characters functioning. Why are they there Honours in about sythesizing your research, not going so far as innovation of the topic. What are you doing to show what others aren't seeing, below the surface of the topic? What are the other topics just around yours that you are shining a light on?

Reflecting on the second showing

My 10/5 reflecting on last week's presentation and feedback: My project is about responding to generic fantasy tropes through thoughtful world building and empathy. There is a widely accepted brand of fantasy that rules over the genre, and because of this, artists and writers, myself included, can lean towards just recreating these images without thinking about why they are designed that way and what the audience is getting out of it. People were overall interested in the concept and where I would go with it. Some feedback I got from my peers and tutors was: Don’t overload the project  - it’s a very wide topic that could go many places, so make sure to plan properly so it can be focused and get finished in the given time frame. Look into the idea of fantasy storytelling as an escape and an opportunity to be put in someone elses’ shoes - empathy is a key ideal both within my project and with how it is received. Look at other media and how other artists/writers have c...

Week 6 - Pre-Second Showing

This week's presentation is a practice for next week's actual second showing.   I need to present my ideas with more confidence. I also had a chance to talk with Kerry Ann about my project. She was worried about the lack of issue in my idea. I mentioned my previous idea that focused more on the idea of generic fantasy, and she was mroe acceptive of that as it's a more focused issue. I had dropped this as the focus as I was concerned about building a world around the concept of 'it's diverse', as it's a bit limiting, but after the talk I feel I can work with it better if I better describe what I plan to do.

Which direction?

I have previously defined my topic as ______. While I still like this general idea, I think my project needs a different summary. My desire for this project is mainly in expanding my own creative practice and skills. I'm an illustrator who wants to tell stories. I want this project to help me get better at doing that. Rather than the details of exactly what I've trying to present, I'm more interested in learning about the process. I want to research and learn how to build world out of the small details; what adornments they wear, their turns of phrase, watching them cook and eat meals. This is the kind of world building that interests and comforts me when watching media, moreso than an essay's worth of political history or made up biology. I'm interested in the characters and their emotions. I want the overall world to be vibrant, but the details to show the heart of it. I still want to keep diversity and the rejection of overused fantasy devices in my vision,...

General Ideas

I already have an idea of the world and aesthetic elements I want to put in it. These will be developed and changed with my research but here they are as they stand. The big thematic thing I based thing world around is birds. This gives me a good starting point for the culture and design rather than pulling stuff out of the air. The people are bird like and have magic wings that allow them the ability to glide shirt distances. This opens their range of movement up greater than our own. RELIGION The religion is based on the sky, due to the whole birds and flight thing. The main gods are the Sun and Moon. The lesser gods are the Lord of the Winds and Lady of the Stars. There's a religious figure called the Phoenix. The first Phoenix was the human daughter of the Sun, who looked upon the people she created and wanted a child of her own. However, when the Phoenix went to live among the humans, they eventually became jealous of the powers the Sun had given her, seeing her as fa...
